Raeo - Body Loops (French Import)
Raeo is a duo dedicated to the search for new instrumental forms and new directions in post-popular music. A soundscape for the turn of millenium. Raeo features No-Wave pioneer, Mark Cunningham (ex-Mars and Lydia Lunch collaborator) and Gat (ex-Error Genetico, ex-Buildings.) Body Loops fuses the lyrical force of Mark's trumpet and the industrial power of Gat's bass to its own trademark syncopated rhythms, creating a swirl of psychoacoustic electronica and timeless feeling. Released by France's Amanita Records.

Reptiljian / Ibrahim Terzic - split (Finnish Import)
Reptiljan is one of the many monikers of Finland's Niko Skorpio. This project is perhaps my favorite of Niko's, a chaotic electronica wherein everything from noise to breaks and glitch to exreme metal meet and explode. Ibrahim Terzic's Yuck Brij shows Terzic pushing his unique style a few steps further with mind-piercing screeches, manifold rhythms and mutating melodies. Limited edition of 300 copies. |

Reptiljian - Archaeodermophagia (Finnish Import)
Finland's some Place Else Label has consistently released solid material from a wealth of artists (Ovro, Mockingwyrd, etc.) but Reptiljian has always been our favorite artist from their roster. 2005's Hellbender Suite was a cut up digital collage of fractured beats, warped sounds and noise that transcended "noise." After a two year break in releases, Reptiljian has returned embracing analogue technology and composition in place of utter chaos. And the packaging is FUCKED. I won't go into too much detail, but human hair is involved and possibly human blood as well. Edition of 104 copies, hand-numbered. Includes certificate of authenticity. |

Reverend Beat-man and The Church of Herpes - Your Favorite Position is on Your Knees (Swiss Import)
When I first heard that Swiss experimentalists, Herpes o DeLuxe, were teaming up with the Reverend Beat-man(perhaps best described as Switzerland's answer to Screamin' Jay Hawkins), I didn't know what to think. Two entities that are radically different colliding in a project that was recorded over a number of years. The result is very different from what either group does
alone(the true sign of a great collaboration!!) and truly amazing. It reminds me of "10th Anniversary"- era Residents meets the first few Foetus albums, but way freaking weirder. And they do version of Carl Perkins "Blue Suede shoes" which would surely bring that overweight freakshow in the white jumpsuit to tears. A definite must!!! Released in a fancy tri-fold digipak by Beat-man's own Voodoo Rhythm Records. |

Ritual Device - Rabe
Omaha, Nebraska's Ritual Device had a short but sassy existence in the early-mid 90's. They shared a split 10" with Killdozer on Man's Ruin, released a full-length, Henge(which sold over 10,000 copies) and then broke up. These days most folks would know them as the band that Tim Moss (of Porn/Melvins roadie fame) was in. Randy and Mike from Ritual Device went on to form Ravine. This 7" is two older tracks that surfaced after their demise. Frank Kozik did the artwork for the inner labels and the outer art is the documentation of a mangled hand that is seen healing over a series of 20+ insurance photos. These are apparently from a doorman from one of Nebraska's finest rock and roll establishments. Not for the squeamish, but not as bad as some of the Unsane 7"s, so most folks will be able to deal. Released by -Ismist Records. These are long out of print, but we grabbed the last few copies from the label. |

Rust Ionics - Moving/Pictures
Moving/Pictures marks the first vinyl release on Colour Sounds Recordings. A black sheet of improvised sonic skull-fuckery from the depths of the most mind-splitting free-noise/brutal-jazz movement. Full on grindcore/metal scapes clashed with fiercely extended saxophone use and a dynamic whirl of free-improvisational magic. Comes on transparent blue vinyl in a limited edition of 311 copies in a clear picture disc sleeve. We only have 2 copies of this, so act fast if you want one! |

Sabbat - Live Sabbatical Hamaguri Queen
It's been over 20 years since Japan's Sabbat started their descent into hell. They were one of the first Japanese bands to play evil heavy metal in the style of Venom, Angel Witch, Iron Maiden, Hellhammer, etc. This live CD contains soundboard quality live tracks recorded during their 20th anniversary tour in Japan. Released by Nuclear War Now Productions. |

Sheperds - Loco Hills (Swedish Import)
Loco Hills, the debut full length from these Brooklyn bush babies, is the sound of a rolling southwestern road trip. It is the sound of unknown terrain, and appropriately Loco Hills finds Shepherds entering full band territory for the first time. A fully realized jam document, toying at times with structure, Shepherds never lose sight of the "drop everything and make music" mentality that makes them so exciting. Swirling strings, tape manipulations. Bongos and wah, fire and bone. Released by Release the Bats and featuring members of Meneguar, Woods and The Vanishing Voice. |

Shunatao - Highway to Hell (French Import)
First of all, any band that appropriates(or flat our steals) the title of an AC/DC album as their own gets major points in my book. Having said that, Shunatao get even more points for this amazing album. Highway to Hell is a mixture of Captain Beefheart's twisted blues and Kurt Weill polka-fuckery all tied together with just the right amount of improvisation. A lot of music flows through the PG office, but this was a serious breath of fresh air! Highly Recommended. Released by the awesome French label, Amanita. |

Skullflower - IIIrd Gatekeeper
Skullflower's acclaimed 1992 album IIIrd Gatekeeper featured the lineup of Matthew Bower (guitar), Stuart Dennison (drums and vocals), and Anthony DiFranco (bass), and which had originally been released on HeadDirt, the label run by Justin Broadrick in the early 90's. This is Skullflower at their heaviest, grinding out slow, sludgy riffs and crushing, almost industrial rhythms amid a tempest of psychedelic guitar noise and dense sheets of feedback - easily the most crushing, rock-based music that Skullflower ever produced. The CD reissue of IIIrd Gatekeeper features extensive liner notes on from Skullflower historian Roy K. Felps (Korperschwache). Thanks to Adam and Crucial Blast for bringing this album back into print! ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELY ESSENTIAL. |

Sleep - Volume One
The band thanks four people on the inside of this record. It is by no coincidence that those four people happen to be the four original members of Black Sabbath. This fucking rules. And if you have been living under a rock... this is the first album from Sleep, the post-Asbestos Death, pre-High On Fire/pre-Om project from a few guys that have since achieved rockstar (or almost rockstar) status. Jointly released by Tupelo and one of my favorite labels of the 90's, David Hayes' Very Small Records! |

Sons of Bronson - Nias y Marisco (Spanish Import)
I'm not sure who Bronson is(unless they mean Charles), but his sons are some noisey fucks. From Barcelona, comes some of the best earsplitting noise we've heard since Wiese, Merzbow, Black Meat, etc. This is just a full on assault of high frequency's, brash swirls of distortion and unrelenting feedback. Not for the faint noise dabbler, but diehard noiseniks will find a lot to tug their pud over. Sent to us by Carlos and Parade Records. |

Souvenir's Young America - s/t
Richmond, Virginia's SYA create sounds that could be called electronic, metal, prog, and ambient all at once. Yet it all works together completely. Epic, spiraling dirges with keyboards, percussion, samples, guitars, accordion, xylophone, cello, and much more fill these songs. This album is a pretty intense statement for a debut. I look forward to hearing what SYA does next. Brought to us by Mr. Bill and Ms. Chris and their NY-based imprint, Underadar. |

Souvenirs Young America - An Ocean without Water
SYA unleash their follow up to their debut CD on Underadar. A lot of comparisons come to mind when listening to SYA... Isis, Pelican, and their ilk as SYA is instrumental, meditative and spacey with bits of heaviness thrown in. But there is something different here. Perhaps it's the moments that sound like Ry Cooder's "Paris, Texas" soundtrack or the delicate piles of electronics or the random squeels of harmonica that bleed into the mix when least expected. This is good stuff. Real good stuff. And it's released by Crucial Blast in a fancy 6 panel digipack. Highly recommended! |

Still - Remains
Former D?lek Turntablist, Still (Hsi-Chang Lin) goes solo and unleashes a dark ambient masterpiece that borders on sonic terrorism. Created using only Technics 1200's and an array of effects pedals, Still's Remains is not a "turntablist" record in the traditional sense. Drawing from (and adding to) the history of alternative turntable use, Remains is an ambient record whose textures at times run side by side with the work of Phillip Jeck or Aphex Twin. Two laborious years were put into the 35 minutes that comprise the album. Each track was painstakingly mapped out and played live in the studio. Opening with aggressive noise and evolving into delicate ambience, Remains supersedes the preconceived range of the turntable, infusing emotion into an otherwise inhuman instrument. |

Strotter Inst. - Monstranz (Swiss import)
RESTOCK AT CHEAPER PRICE! Swiss turntable maestro, Christoph Hess, has been experimenting with turntables for close to 15 years, both as a solo artist and in the context of Herpes o DeLuxe. Mr. Hess uses five Lenco turntables and various objects, including a variety of damaged records. On Monstranz, lots of rubber bands are stretched to create different, repetitive "notes." The resulting pieces at times resemble a multiple double basses being strummed and looped to create a wonderful, hypnotic drone. Track one is lathe cut into the digipak cover and must be played on a turntable!!!! The final track is an MP3 only track found on the Strotter website. The remaining tracks are of course, on the CD. So, in listening to the work, you move your way through an abbreviated history of release formats. Released by Everest Records. |

Strotter Inst. - Anna / Anna
Using five, old manipulated Lenco turntables and various cut or scotched records and found objects, Switzerland's Strotter Inst. (aka Christoph Hess) creates polymorph sound and rhythm structures. The tracks on "Anna/Anna" are more atmospheric than past works and at times resemble field recordings of "lurching" frogs. The listener is met with a single black 7" record(with no labels) in a clear sleeve. Once the record has been removed, the artwork and liner notes(which double as a map to instruct the listener on how to play the record) are revealed and can only be read though the clear sleeve. The tracks (two per side) play inside out and outside in ending in the center of the record in the same locked groove. |

Sweet new noise/drone/ambient project from the Inam Records label. We have no idea who or what Sujo is (as there is no info anywhere on this and a google search brings up nothing), but this twenty minute blast is fucking sweet! Taarma - Remnants of a Tormenting Black Shadow (Canadian Import)
This may be the first Black Metal album from Afghanistan. Yes, you read correctly, Taarma is from Afghanistan and is A-W-E-S-O-M-E. This is one of my favorite styles of BM ? slow and melancholic, drenched with droning buzz and topped with disjointed, dissonant melodies and tortured vocals. One of the best new BM discs to come through in a while. And there?s even a Xasthur cover on here too! Released by Canada?s Suffering Jesus imprint, who has also brought us great works from Tjolgtjar and d-beat black metallers, Malveillance. |

Taarma - In Death / Submerge (French Import)
I am way into Taarma's "Remnants of a Tormenting Black Shadow" CD on Suffering Jesus, so I got a hold of a handful of copies of their debut 7". This is the one man Black Metal outfit from Afghanistan that plays stellar slow, meloncholic BM. And the label that this is released on is very cool... Tabata Mitsuru - Lumrapideco
Oh, I love Tabata. His two 7"s, his two full-length's on Elsie and Jack, his collab's with Guilty Connector and Astro. All of it is stellar, not to mention his astounding work with Zeni Geva (and AMT, Marble Sheep, Boredoms, et all) So, when I heard he would be part of the Utech Arc series, I was stoked. A great artist working with a great label. What more can you ask for? Lumrapideco ("speed of light") is a collection of spaced-out electronics, bleak feedback and sedate guitar passages. Sometimes oppressive sometimes heart stirring, it is never less than astonishing. Very much recommended! |

Jorma Tapio & Terje Isungset - Aihki (Finnish Import)
One of the most interesting records I purchased in 2006 was Terje Isungset's "Igloo", a record made entirely from instruments made from ice!! (aQuarius Recrds turned me on to it and you need to go buy it from them!) Finland's Ektro Records recently released this gem, a collaboration between Isungset and Jorma Tapio, one of Finland's finest woodwind players. The result is an AMAZING mix of free jazz and free folk(all of course played on ethnic Scandanavian instruments.) Tracks range from full-on skittering onslaughts to delicate focused, shamanistic melodies. The vibe here is incredibly natural. If I didn't know better, I would assume this was recorded in a forest. Truly fucking brilliant! |

Teho Teardo - Tower/ Microphone (Italian Import)
A CD document of a Sound installation commissioned by Hic et nunc, contemporary art festival, San Vito al Tagliamento, Pordenone, 2005. 24 contact microphones were placed on the roof, on the walls, between the bricks, and under the round of an ancient tower. All 24 mics were plugged into a pa system which made the tower become a big microphone. The end result is gentle repetitive patterns that play out over a consistent and beautiful drone. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Released by Italy?s Final Muzik. |

Terminal Lovers - Release Valve Rattle
We saw a lot of shows last year, but few floored us the way the Terminal Lovers did. 5 Guys from Cleveland, all pushing forty that plugged in and laid waste to everything in site, including the young opening bands with their costumes and hairdos. This is a brand new 3 track, 30 minute, slab of limited Terminal Lovers courtesy of Biological Records. This is by far the most kraut-y and space-y I have ever heard TL, but there is still plenty of bite like their first CD. Tigrova Mast - s/t (Russian Import)
We really dig the Croatian psyche Unit, Seven that Spells. Their first two releases on RAIG (our favorite Russian label) blew us away and they recently hooked up with Beta-Lactum Ring for their first US release. The avant-prog instrumental trio, Tigrova Mist is a much different animal than 7TS, but features a member or two in common. Tis debut is 18 tracks of quick and snazzy tunes akin to early Mr. Bungle or Uze Jsme Doma, but with a bit more space between the notes. This disc was mastered by Tatsuya Yoshida (Ruins) and includes the band's entire "Live@Kset" performance as a video file. Tjolgtjar - Midnight Mindtrip (Canadian Import)
We love Tjolgtjar, the lo-fi midwestern metal lord with a Ted Nugent fetish who has cranked out a handful of awesome discs over the past few years. His version of black metal leans towards the Venom -ous roots of BM and may not seem very BM at times due to the myriad of influences he incorporates into his sound, but that?s what makes it so damn awesome. This album opens with a sweet stoner riff and lead (that you will swear are lifted from and early Obsessed track) but quickly turns into a grinding, lo-fi, Black Metal symphony accented by horror soundtrack snippets and odd, but fitting keyboard melodies. Thirteen tracks of what can truly be called ?outsider metal,? the final track being a cover of Judas Priests ?Deceiver.? And he hits all of Halford?s high notes, which is no easy task. A+ all around!
