Uvall - October Turns...Ruined

Uvall's second album presents a more doomy atmospheric approach (highly influenced by the current USBM scene) to add to the frosty grim blizzard-based atmospheric Black Metal that is signature UVALL. Mesmerizing, melancholy, and deeply atmospheric (almost shoe-gaze-y at times), with songs that burrow permanently into your memory. Released by Black Metal.com and featuring Todd Paulson(who is also the solo project Dormant, and and the label boss of God is Myth Records.)

v/a - Drone Records: A Selection Of Drones Past: Singles 1993-2000

Run by Stefan of Troum, Germany's Drone Records does two things that we love(drones and 7"s) very well! San Fransisco's tUMULt has compiled a handful of out of print Drone Records material on a 2CD set for what they call, "a digital introduction to the analog world of Drone Records." The artists featured include Maeror Tri, Alio Die, Dual, Ultra United, Delphium, Inade, Aube, Vance Orchestra, Osso Exotico, Klood, Vir, Reynols, Spear, Dronaement, Toy Bizarre, Tarkatak, Francisco Lopez, Kallabris, Yen Pox and Die Feinen Trinkers Bei Pinkels Daheim. A small sampling of wonderous sounds from this ongoing series of limited, lovingly hand assembled 7" singles. Packaged in a beautiful, cd gatefold, with a fold out poster, liner notes on one side, reproductions of all the 7" covers on the other. This is without a doubt, HIGHLY recommended!!!!

v/a -Record of Shadows Infinite

Adam at Crucial Blast really knows how to put together a comp. Record of Shadows Infinite is no exception. The line-up(Ruhr hunter, Troum, House of Low Culture, Fransisco Lopez, Thuja, Chaos as Shelter, Beneath the Lake, Scot Generik, and more!) and sequencing are stellar and Aaron Turner's homage to aboriginal artwork wraps it all up in a beautiful package! Easily one of the best drone compilations ever. Highly Recommended. Might I also recommend the CDr companion to this release, Shadows Infinitium. Also killer!

v/a - Shadows Infinitium

Awesome companion CDr comp to the super "Record of Shadows Infinite" CD.he wrangling of top-notch drone/psych/drift artists continues with this full length, extremely polished CD-r release, limited to 250 copies. Exclusive tracks from Dead Raven Choir, Encomiast, Korperschwache, Existential Dilemma, BUurnign Star Core, Feverdreams, Nadja, Marax, and UnholyDeathMachine run the gamut: these further explorations of the drone touch on blackened folk creep, glacial hum and gorgeous ambient bliss, buzzsaw feedback rituals, imploding-sun droneblast, improvised clatter and drift, epic driftmetal, vampiric dronenoise, and schizophrenic kool-aid burble riots. Another exercise in intelligent, outsider droneworks from CRUCIAL BLAST.

Verde - Legenda (Finnish Import)

Legenda is the second official CD by Verde, lead by electronics wizard/madman Mika Rintala (ex-Circle, Ektroverde). Legenda is a logical continuum of the 1960s and 1970s wild electronic experiments and general recklessness of Finnish Underground Music. Legenda is a logical continuum of Krautrock as bands like Faust, Can, Neu and Amon Duul presented it for us. Legenda is a logical continuum of the work that was started back in the day by Nurse With Wound, Throbbing Gristle and such industrial music pioneers. Legenda is a logical continuum of Miles Davis masterworks such as Bitches Brew and his live recordings from the same era. The music of Verde is not meant for superficial listening. Verde challenge their listeners instead of trying to please them. Legenda is packaged in a digipak and co-released by Musically Incorrect Records, Zum Teufel and Ruma Puulaaki. Limited to 500 copies

Vopat - Tell Them we are Dead

Holy Christ, Inam Records really knows how to do a CDr release. No spray paint on a dynex CDr here! These are pro CDr's with a beautiful pro screenprint and the artwork is a spectacular multi layer opaque vellum with beautiful color print. Disc one is ten tracks of all new delicate, post rock-ish material in the vein of a Mogwai or Explosions in the Sky. Disc 2 is a re-issue of an older limited release, "Calcutta," which is one 30 minute drone track which is dark and full of texture and dynamics. A fantastic release overall. Highly recommended stuff from this Bloomington, Indiana outfit.

Vopat - s/t

A nice new 3" blast from Vopat, one of the many projects of Ryan Huber. This is the first Vopat release in a while as Ryan has been focusing on Bobcrane and Olekranon of late. But this little 6 track ditty is a whopper of a release. As big as the Vopat 2CD even though it is much smaller and shorter. The closing track, "Opius" is perhaps my favorite Vopat track to date. Fucking stellar from start to finish. Wrap your ears around this little fella. You will be glad you did! Nice little package as well. Sorry for the lack of scan!

Walter-Barr-Hillmer 10"

A trio consisting of Weasel Walter (the Flying Luttenbachers, xbxrx, Lake of Dracula, Hatewave, etc..) Mick Barr (Orthrelm, Octis, Ocrilim, Quix*o*tic, Crom-tech, etc) and Sam Hillmer (Zs). Wow! This is blistering, skronking, twisted free-jazz / modern composition fused with some metal. One track written by Walter, one by the trio, and one by Hillmer. Limited to 300 on white vinyl from Epicene Sound Systems.

John Watermann- Calcutta Gas Chamber (UK Import)

The concept of aurally conveying the horror of a gas chamber was realised through field recordings in an abandoned electrical power station in Brisbane in 1992. The sounds are grating and harsh, a mixture of field recordings and electronic manipulations. One can rarely pinpoint a location or action but the images the sounds conjure up are of all sorts of nefarious activites related to death by machinery. The sleeve notes take you into the horror that is the Calcutta Gas Chamber. A beautifully composed and produced CD, completely remastered and re-packaged by UK's Coldspring Records. Bone-chilling.

Wildildlife - Six CD

This disc RULES! Just rolled in a few hours ago and it has already swept me off my feet. Heavy, punishing, and desolate like Swans, poppy but rocking like the first Cheap Trick record, and mystical and psychedelic like the Buttholes giving forest-hippie-nymph-weirdness a go. And the sound... the sound is HUGE across the board!!! This disc is a real fucking winner! Crucial Blast does it again and the packaging is a nice thick full color gatefold sleeve with the cover sporting a tripped out skull (ala Archie Shepp's the Magic of Juju, but slightly less hippy and more artschool chic) and lots of tongue in cheek photos of the band in the woods complete with facepaint and masks. This disc deserves to be on a shit-ton of "Best of 2007" lists. If we made one of those, it would be on ours! Uh... RECOMMENDED.

Wildildlife - Peas Feast

We gushed over the Wildildlife "Six" disc from Crucial Blast a few months ago and the band recently hooked us up with a handful of their new limited CDr. Four tracks, clocking in at 25 minutes, recorded live to tape in the bands rehearsal space... "Peas Feast" is the sonic equivalent to a pissed-off bull on a shit-ton of codeine. The sounds are woozy, stoner-y, and drug-induced, but melodic and catchy (so you can tap your toe to them ultra-slow-like). Like a modern day, new/no-wave influenced, Buttholes Surfers but with bigger nads. Holy shit, I just realized I am wearing their shirt as I write this. How fucking gay...

Wold - Screech Owl (Canadian Import)

Antoine from Aluk Todolo tipped me off to this Saskatchewan Black Metal trio a while back and I am so glad he did. This is some of the most insane, over the top, blown-out, fuzz-fueled black metal I have ever heard and it is quite addictive. And just when you are beginning to feel like things are maybe too overwhelming, Wold pulls back for some melody (still fuzzed-out) and lo-fi glitchy goodness. You gotta check these guys out. This shit rules! Released by Canada’s awesome Profound Lore label.

Womba - The 27th Baku Comissar (Russian Import)

Womba is the solo project of Tikhon Kubov, who is also an active member of the Russian outfits Won James Won and Mux. Womba is all about homestyle DIY manipulation with tapes, loops, samples, various electronic devices and effects. The result is very disturbing minimalist-drone aggression which resembles psycho-collage sampledelic and dark-cinematic music. Killer stuff, packaged in a very cool, thick, corrugated cardboard digipak style gatefold. Released by an awesome Russian label (RAIG - Russian Association of Independent Genres) Check out their other releases great releases available here from Seven that Spells, Won James Won, Bosch's With You, and Irmologion.

World Below - Maelstrom (Hungarian Import)

World Below is here with their second album. Incorporating influences from darker parts of the metal palette they fuse elements of black, doom and war metal to produce a blend of slow and tortured music... in two words, epic doom. Further listening revealed more intricacies of riffs galore, constant and frequent melody and tempo changes, commendable double guitar work and thick tone, all very tastefully executed. The melody seems unstoppable as it flows in a stoic manner from song to song, remaining dark and anthem-like. Swedes have a good track record of creating powerfully epic doom and World Below is not an exception. Released by Hungary's PsycheDOOMelic label!

Peter Wright - Pretty Mushroom Cloud

We have a handful of Peter Wright discs in the mailorder and a handful more in the personal collection and all of them are so amazing, delicate and beautiful! This new five track droner courtesy of Slimm/Archive CD is a mix of ambient guitar work, field recordings, and soundscapes recorded between 2005-2006. Housed in a double sleeve with outer sleeve being semi transparent vellum, all graphic work by Mr. Wright. Single pressing of 500 copies. Recommended for sure!

Wzt Hearts - Heat Chief

Lots of bands channel This Heat these days(most just try to be them), but few take their essence and make it their own. Baltimore's Wzt Hearts(pronounced "wet hearts") is one of the few. Their debut, Heat Chief, is wide open, alternately conjuring images of noise gristle, free-jazz wallop, psychedelic expansiveness, and the intellectual curiosity of modern composition. Robert Rich has a series of nonsensical words to describe certain sounds in music. I believe Wzt Hearts has a lot of what Mr. Rich refers to as "glurb." Take a listen and you'll see what I mean. Beautiful cover art by the band's Shaun Flynn! LP from Hoss Records. CD from HitDat.

Zeni Geva - Total Castration

The 1991 disc from the Japanese giant (which features the dueling guitar work of KK Null and Tabata Mitsuru). Released on Public Bath before their jump to Alternative Tentacles (and then later to Neurot). A truly amazing record from one of the most under-appreciated bands of the last 20 years. Contains my favorite ZG song of all time, “Blood Sex.”

Zeni Geva - Maximum Money Monster (UK Import)

I am huge ZG fan, so I was super stoked when I heard Cold Spring was reissuing this long out of print disc (originally released by Patholigical Records in 1990). MMM collects the first two LP's (released in the late 80's on KK Null’s own, Nux Organization label) together on one disc. This reissue has new artwork and three bonus tracks from the same time period. These guys were the shit and still are. Few acts touched upon the power and genius that ZG had a handle on. Pick this up!!

Zu - Observing the Armies in the Battlefield

Zu defies genres, destroys boundaries and categories about what a rock or jazz combo is and how it behaves. No-wave, funk, hardcore-punk, jazz, and mathematics held together in an instrumental three-piece. On their debut picture disc, Zu teams up with Italian turntable manipulator, Okapi for three new tracks of heavy, free jazz skronk wrapped around manipulated vinyl samples ranging from spoken word records to warped musical oddities. The picture disc features amazing artwork from long time Zu collaborator, Scarful.
