AAN - Salamaa (Finnish Import)

These recordings document the first meetings of this duo in Helsinki and Tampere in late 2004. The music is full of mystery and dark atmospheres that take you on a mystical journey through shimmering forests and cosmic sky-scapes. Excellent stuff. Limited and brought to us by the Ikuisuus label, which is also responsible for releases from Anla Courts, Peter Wright and Ashtray Navigations.

Adaptories - music playground revisited (Greek Import)

More or less what happens when 7 people are together with lots of instruments, buttons, toys, laptops, various noise making devices and the desire to use them in a creative way. You can add or exclude drugs, fantasy, mental diseases according to your personal taste and the myth you want to create. What you get is the same anyway: free improvised music based on hard rhythms or harder sounds. Released by the amazing greek label, 1000+1 tilt, which is also responsible for the live strotter CD as well as discs from Novi Sad, PS Stamps Back, No Exit and Botong.

Ishai Adar - Beaufort Original Soundtrack (Israeli Import)

The original soundtrack to the Oscar- nominated Israeli film is a dark and gloomy affair that hybrids between processed digital sounds, warm ambient scapes & light touches of 70's Progressive Rock. Adar creates a shimmering yet disturbing soundtrack for this Anti-war film, where melodic and lucid electronica gently transforms into irritating minimal soundscapes, before diving into a black blowhole of gloomy electronic bloodbath. Simply beautiful stuff! Released by Jerusalem-based electro-label, Ak Duck.

Aeoga - Zenith Beyond the Helix-Locus (Finnish Import)

The sophomore release from Finland's Aeoga is a blend of amorphous ambience accented with wild, hallucinatory sequences. The fifteen formations manifest themselves in various forms; bright and luminous helixes intertwine with shadowed and shapeless non-beings. All in all truly overwhelming material where acoustic instruments and electronic equipment mingle themselves to channel forth the aural elemental current. Released by Finland's Aural Hypnox in oversized 4 panel 7"x7"cardboard covers.

Ala Muerte - s/t

If you caught Destructo Swarmbots on their recent tour, you were graced with the beautiful voice and delicate guitar work of NY’s, Bianca Ala Muerte. This 5 song CDr is a brief introduction to her solo work which is ethereal and hypnotic and all around wonderful. Fun fact: the band name directly translates to "Dead Wing" but is a nice play on words with "of the dead". A 3" Cdr collaboration with England’s Max Bondi will be surfacing later this year on PG! (Update: disc available below)

Alethes - Aletheia

Chet and Rachel Scott have been releasing amazing drone and neo-classical albums (including Chet's own Ruhr Hunter) on their Glass Throat Recordings imprint for the past half a decade or more. Their latest is from Cascadia's Alethes, a new act to my ears, but one that deserves all the attention it gets. Alethes is a dark and somber outfit with songs ranging from acoustic chamber sounds (ala Amber Asylum) to full on acoustic doom. Beautiful melodies and gruff vocals. Some of the Neurosis solo/side projects are a good reference(Harvestman, Scott Kelly, etc.) This is beautiful stuff! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! The first pressing (which we have here) features a 6 panel, 6" x 6" package w/ black foil stamping on an obscure black leathery stock! Perhaps one of the nicest packages yet from GT, and that is saying a lot as their back catalog is gorgeous.

Amber Asylum - Garden Of Love (UK Import)

San Francisco's Kris Force and co. return with their first new recordings in nearly five years. Four new dark, chamber works (one broken into two movements.) Their label (UK's Paradigms) calls this a "blackened neo-classical masterpiece" and I agree. Amber Asylum truly are the masters of their craft and this release is no exception. Highly Recommended!

Aquarius Void - Walk Behind

In the overflowing sea of recycled Sabbath and Kyuss riffs(better known as the "stoner rock" genre,) there are only handful of bands which really stand out and deserve your attention. Michigan's Aquarius Void is one of those bands. These two killer tracks of fuzzed-out rock bliss will definitely leave you wanting more. Can't wait for a full-length from these guys! From the 7" friendly label, Unfortunate Miracle.

Artbreakhotel/Graham Moore - split

Graham Moore (of the group Black Meat and the label Blossoming Noise) has been performing and releasing some of the best noise around these days. On this release, his own work and label overlap, but humble Graham doesn't even put his name on the outside of the CD. Before opening this, you will assume that is it's not a split but in fact just a solo outing from Nobuo Yamada's Artbreakhotel. Upon opening we find a monster of a metal-clattering meets electronics track from Yamada entitled "Frozen" and 3 tracks from Graham. Warning: "Chimp Sandwich part 1" is very "belchy" in sound and may activate your gag reflex. All good noise recordings should do this.

Hallvardur Asgeirsson - Lifsblomid (UK Import)

Eight pieces written by Icelandic composer Hallvardur Asgeirson and performed at the Academy Of Arts in Reykjavik. Challenging yet beautiful, powerful and evocative avant modern classical composition taking elements of the 20th Century Viennese musical school of Schonberg, Berg and Webern, the urban deconstructionalism of Einsturzende Neubauten and the desolate arctic glow of Sigur Ros, Biosphere or the Kranky Records roster. Droning doomed classical, shadowy atmospherics and carefully layered works complemented by choral Teutonics for female voice. A mighty proposition indeed. Packaged in a DVD case with nice white and gold print on a red background. Released by Paradigms Recordings.

Astro - Astral Orange Sunshine

I have always been a fan of Astro (aka Hiroshi Hasegawa of the legendary Japanese noise outfit C.C.C.C), but this disc really bends my mind in a way that few of his others do. Even if you have not done drugs for years, or ever at all, this disc will make you feel like you are in a parallel dimension. This is the definition of spaced-out and I don’t mean in a bad way. This is AWESOME!!! Recorded between 2004 and 2007 using the EMS Synth as it's main sound generator. Released in a snazzy digipak by Blossoming Noise.

Aufgehoben - Anno Fauve (UK Import)

Anna Fauve begins quietly, almost like a radiator gently expelling steam, but the barrage of sound that follows is sure to blow your mind. Intense two drummer, one guitarist improv that is a at times trippy, but mostly crushing, piercing, over the top sound that will push raise your pulse and make your brain feel as though it's breaking through your skull to get some fresh air. Play this loud and frequently!! On Riot Season.

Aufgehoben - picture disc

Damn, ever since I heard Anno Fauve, I have been way into England’s Aufgehoben. This is their debut 7" release, brought to us courtesy of Pennsylvania’s White Denim. These two tracks are from the same session as the Messidor full-length, and are so over the top, there were apparently issues getting the vinyl mastered. Highly recommended and beautiful artwork as always, although it is hidden inside a simple black sleeve!

Aughra - A Sleeping Bag & A Shitload Of Acid

Holy shit! I have been a fan of Brent Eyestone? Aughra project for a while, but seeing this Live DVD take my love of his work to a whole new level. His live show consists of Brent inside of a tent which is filled with smoke and backlit from behind. The result is almost spaceship like and works wonderfully with Aughra? ambient stylings. This show is his first and it involves lots of rednecks sloshed on free PBR and tripping on anarchist cookbook-recipe acid and going apeshit. Let's just say this is probably the only ambient show to ever be sponsored by PBR and then shut down due to the chaos that ensued. Released by UndeRadar.

Baby Zizanie - Domestic Landscapes #3: Thalassaphobia (Italian Import)

Baby Zizanie is a collaborative project which combines the talents of J.G.Thirlwell (Foetus, Steroid Maximus, Manorexia, Wiseblood, DJ Otefsu etc) and Jim Coleman (ex-Cop Shoot Cop, Phylr, Here). The music performed by JGT and Coleman emanates from laptop computers and other electronic devices, veering from disturbed sounds capes to seductive rhythmic passages to body-mangled beats. An electronic excursion into psychosis and seduction. Limited to 500 and almost out of print from the now defunct Italian label, Nail.

Bardo Pond - Live

Two track live recording of a mostly acoustic performance that was played at someone's house in Philly. Swirls of percussion and droney opening elements settle down the handful of folks gathered chatting as first track slips into a dreamy 33min lush drone pysch realm. Second 12 minute version of Walking Clouds is a hybrid given instrumentation and setting for this live set. In a lot of ways this really sums up what I always wanted the label to be. Documentation of unique live music that ends up getting a life beyond the 20 people that originally were there to take it all in. Courtesy of Slimm and Archive! Limited to 600 copies.

Baroness - Second

Savannah, GA's Baroness blew me away live a while back and I can't help but see how they wouldn't floor anyone who saw them. Second is the follow-up EP to their debut EP (appropriately titled, "First") and is by far their strongest work to date. Baroness have found a way to intermingle doom and crust with good old fashion southern rock riffs for what is surely the most unique and original sound in metal today. Highly Recommended. This is released by Hyperrealist. Watch for a split with Unpersons to drop on At A Loss in the coming months.

The insanely prolific Norwegian duo Sindre Bjerga and Jan Iversen have released 30+ CD's and CDr's on various labels over the years. This is their first for Minneapolis' Housepig, Cosmic Surgery uses ‘amplified objects and electronix’ to produce a disturbing atmosphere of surveillance, paranoia and desolate space. This is one of the most prolific duo's around these days(with limited editions CDr's on countless labels-- Utech, 1000+1 TiLt, Dead Sea Liner, etc.) and each release is as good if not better than the last. Black Blacks - Burn Yourself to Sleep

I have been hearing the name Black Blacks for years, but this 5 track, 40 minute disc is my first introduction. And it’s quite good. Minimalist post-rock that is at times is purely ambient, other times, mellow and krautrock influenced with rambling violins and disjointed found object percussion. There’s a lot going on here and it should feel cluttered, but it never does. Everything meshes together nicely and works really, really well. Released by Atlanta’s Robotfishy imprint.

Black Elk - s/t

Adam at Crucial Blast has the best taste in music. He's released some of PG's favorite records over the past few years(Skullflower, Genghis Tron, The Mass, etc.) and he continues to put out stunning release after stunning release. He apparently stumbled across Black Elk on Myspace one day and fell in love. It's not hard to see why. These guys kick it out. Here's the word... "The eponymous debut from Portland, Oregon's Black Elk is a raging destructo rock eruption, heavy, catchy, and flattening. This ten song album contains a creeped out conglom of carnivorous charred hardcore punk, the sludgy power of primo Pacific Northwest tarpit rawk (think Karp, Melvins, and early Soundgarden as reference points), twitchy Midwestern noise rage somewhere between Am Rep Records (circa-1991) and a more rabid Die Kreuzen, and a goatheaded psychedelic backwoods black mass/dance party risen to a freakin' fever pitch. Total crush." Thank you, Adam. Thank you!

About six months ago, a CDr arrived in the PG PO box. It was Bobcrane's "Forever, Inc." And thankfully, more releases began to show up and soon, enough for us to sell. We have two newer Bobcrane releases to offer and both are AWESOME! We had the bulk of Burmese's discography in stock a few years ago but it sold out. The band is no more, but this album still rules, so we got a few more copies back in stock. Celtic Frost - Monothiest

I keep meeting folks who have not heard CF(even avid black metal fans!) and it boggles my mind. This is their most recent album and for some, their return to glory. Chefkirk - Zygodactyl

Chefkirk is the project of Richmond, VA's Roger Smith. Mr. Smith has released limited CDr's on 15+ labels all over the world and each one is killer and unique! PG recently saw Chefkirk perform at the 804 Noise and it was amazing. Tiny quiet piercing sounds that droned and built only to explode into heavy pulsing rhythms of noise ala early Godlfesh sans drums and vocals. And once the pulsing gained an almost toetapping rhythm, the set shifted into full on cut-up mode, but still kept us captivated. PG has very limited quantities of all of the Chefkirk CD's listed, but we do recommend grabbing something while you can. Many of these are imports and/or OOP. The Christpunchers - Psalms For a New Dark Age

With one of the worst(or possibly, best) names in recent memory, Detroit's Christpunchers come out swinging with one of the ugliest discs I've heard in a while. Psalms For a New Dark Age could fit comfortably amoung the earlt 90's Alternative Tentacles catalog with it's early Neurosis style crust-y riffs and heavy political/social sampling (Chomsky, etc,) in place of vocals. Circle - Katapult

The newest album by Circle (although there will probably be two more by the time this gets posted) is brought to us by Philly’s No Quarter label on both Vinyl and CD. This album has elements of Circle’s metal stylings, but is radically different than anything they have done before. There are lots of Celtic Frost style riffs and some of the vocals and grunts even pay homage to Tom Warrior, but there is also a strong Tangerine Dream / Goblin presence here are well, not to mention plenty of other influences. One of the coolest and hardest to categorize albums from Circle, but also one of their strongest. These guys can pretty much do no wrong at this point.

Here's what the tUMULt overlord says(we think this says it all) ... "Elements of prog, jazz, post-rock, dub, and metal all collide in their intense, utterly original, mindblowing sound. With their unique, hypnotic pull, Circle are the modern-day, northernmost heirs to the krautrock tradition of Can and Neu!, with hints of weirdo 70's progrock a la Magma as well. An atmospheric doom opera that out-spaces most spacerock and out out-posts most post rock." And if that doesn't sway you, there's some flute work on here that would make Nik Turner from Hawkwind cry.

Circle - Sunrise

This is the recent domestic re-issue released by No Quarter. The art has been given a fancy update, but the music remains just as awesome as before. Here’s what we said before... Man, after many years of listening, Circle still blows my mind and surprises me with each new release I hear. Whether it's the full on Saxon meets glam metal stylings of "Earthworm" or the delicate, piano-driven melodies of "Miljard," Circle is just flat out stunning. And with a discography of over 20 releases, they are one of the most prolific bands around. Sunrise is an older album which was out of print for a while and it is probably their heaviest, most metal record of all. Easily in my top 3 faves of their discog. Highly recommended (but so is their entire catalog!)

Closing the Eternity - Northern Lights Ambience (German Import)

CTE is a Siberian drone project from Ekaterinburg. The first vinyl release shows CTE using original 'northern lights sounds' together with synths, implementing very cosmic soundwaves with electronic whirs, sinus-tones and small raspy crater-landscapes inside. There's a drift towards objectlessness and dissolution in these sounds where they undergo into non-existence or is it transformation into a higher existing form? You decide. Dark blue vinyl. The cover is all black with an handmade laser-cut metal key logo glued to it. Very nice! Released by Germany's Drone Records!

Clang Quartet - The Separation of Church & Hate

I recently got to see CQ (aka Scotty Irving) perform in Baltimore. The setting was less than ideal and a lot of the theatrics of the show were missed due to poor lighting, but having seen the short documentary, Armor of God, I was filling in the details with my mind. Powerful and dynamic, Scotty takes the stage and mesmerizes the room with a assortment of home-made instruments and props that all-in-all construct a short play that is an experimental retelling of the Christ-story. Pretty awesome stuff and I am not a religious fella. And why Quartet even though he is solo? Because he has the holy trinity at his back. Or as Ron RRR says, He's four times better than everyone else! Released by Silber Media.

Jim Coleman - Domestic Landscapes #1 (Italian Import)

Jim Coleman is known to many as a 1/4 of the now defunct Cop Shoot Cop and his solo project Phyler. This, the first in a series which also included Rothko and Baby Zizanie, is a great collection of "innovative examples of pure neo-electro, post-experimentalism, not of this world. Melodic sounds capes and backwards futuristic pop for the year 3000". File under Electro, Breakbeat, Ambient, IDM etc. The 6-track 12" was released by Italy's Nail records and is limited to 500 copies.

Joshua Convey - Vacant Integument

The fourth disc in the Utech Arc Series (the fifth, also listed here is from James Plotkin!) is from a new name for me... Joshua Convey. But with the Utech name, one cannot go wrong and once again(as was the case with Knell), this is an amazing release from an unknown artist. Sharp, spiky overtones rattle four skillfully assembled tracks. Each gritty frame is lined with a delicate array of guitar, harmonica and electronics. Quiet drone hums along as melody slowly reveals itself amongst carefully placed shards of raw feedback and noise. Not since Kaoru Abe or Masayoshi Urabe has the harmonica been used to such magnificent effect.

Costes - Oeuvre Au Noir CD (French Import)

Hmmmm? Where to begin with this one. France's Jean Louis Costes is a musical oddity for sure. A quick view of his website will show you countless pictures of his genitals and lots of, uh? scat Having released 20-30 odd records(some in English, some in French, and each incredibly unique), Costes recorded what is refered to as his "death metal album" for France's Amortout label. The result is a part No-wave/part Industrial/part performance art clusterfuck(all in French) which is much cooler than pictures of poo. Not for everyone, but the adventurous listener will find A LOT to enjoy here.

Courtis/Kiritchenko/Moglass (Greek Import)

Very nice 3 way split from Alan Courtis(Argentina), Andrey Kiritchenko(Ukraine) and the MoGlass(Ukraine) in which they each supply sound sources form which to build upon for each others tracks. This covers a lot of territory soundwise... Drones and improv acoustic by Kiritchenko, psycho-folk by the Moglass, and sound-collages by Courtis. We got our copies from Greece's 1000+ 1 Tilt label, but this is co-released with 4 other folks including Rochester's Carbon.

Cream Abdul Babar / Teen Cthulu - split

This may be the two last original tracks to be released by CAB in their history. These two tracks come from same sessions as the Kylesa split. One is a rocker and one a bit of noise fuckery from CAB's Tradd Sanderson (now known as Decimation Blvd.) Teen Cthulu are gone but not forgotten as well. Their blend of power and black metal with hardcore was spectacular. And the packaging here is killer. Amazing artwork (again provided by Tradd Sanderson) which ended up in a few design competitions and the CD itself is a fan disc(you know the 3 inches of CD with an inch of clear plastic around the outside.) Very cool. Released by Hyperealist.

Dälek - Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots

Filthy Tongues is the second Dälek full-length, but the first released on Ipecac, so for many folks it was their introduction to the avant-hip-hop stylings of one of the most original acts around these days. Their first record of two records with Still turntables. Heavy and punishing with some of the most incisive lyrics around! Some copies of the LP have a small bend in the corner of the cover from being carted around on tour, but it's hardly noticeable.

Dälek - Absence

The 3rd record from Jersey's finest, and easily their noisiest. In case you do not know, Dälek are one of the most intense hip-hop acts active today. My Bloody Valentine collides with Mobb Deep. With thunderous beats, layers and layers of manipulated textures and rage-filled political lyrics that have as much in common with Burroughs as the Last Poets. If Godflesh went hip-hop, it would sound something like this.

The latest full-length from Dälek is their most ambient and mellow record to date, but composition-wise their most complex. If you pull the lyrics and beats out, you'd be left with some pretty intense "20th century composer" shit. And "mellow" for Dalek is still pretty fucking heavy, so you will not be disappointed if you prefer their noisier discs. Released by the mighty Ipecac with fucking amazing artwork from Paul Romano.

We’ve been waiting for this disc for a while. I got a sneak peak of this a while back before it was mastered and was blown away. The debut release from Brian Daniloski's (Meatjack, Trephine) latest solo outing and it's a monster. Crushing, ethereal doom intertwined with delicate guitar work and outright disturbing and awkward field recordings from Daniloski's ghetto neighborhood. Dead Elephant - Sing the Separation

Italy's Dead Elephant is an intense trio that mixes elements of noise, hardcore and experimental music for a truly unique debut. There are moments of raw, early Unsane sounding rock that just crushes and minutes later, a more experimental passage will evolve, and it all feels natural. Easily one of the most interesting groups I have heard in a while. Sing the Seperation is 5 tracks in 30 minutes and it's the perfect length. If you want more, hit play again. Drudkh - Songs of Grief and Solitude (UK Import)

Drudkh was created by two members of the Ukrainian Black Metal outfit, Hate Forest. Their earlier albums are more in line with their black metal roots, but this, their fifth album, ventures into acoustic territory, offering ancient, sorrowful, Ukrainian folk songs. The serene, earthy, primitivist atmosphere of the music is accented at times by field recordings of crows and building cocophonies of flutes and other wooded instruments. The booklet comes adorned with old illustrations of Medieval / fantasy folk tales and traditional, Ukrainian decorative motifs. This album is different from their others, yet wholly consistent with the conception of this stellar band. Released by Supernal Records. Superb!

EgoNoir - Der Pfad Zum Fluss(French Import)

This disc really blew me away on first listen and jas continued to after many listens. Ego Noir is a German metal outfit that really is quite unigue and blends so many elements in such a succinct way. Black metal buzzsaw guitar riffs, shoegazer fuzz, acoustic melodies, spoken word samples (that sound especially evil because they are in german), and insane vocals that go from Michael Gira-like guttural rumble to chants to strange moans and tortured howls, the howls sounding at times like the maniacal background screams of Eugene Robinson on early Oxbow records. This record is so over the top in so many ways, it is amazing. This is the latest from Amortout Productions, the French label run by one of the guys from Aluk Todolo. Recommended strongly for those who need more a bit more with their metal. This will not dissappoint.

EHG truly are legends, but since they sort of do the same thing on each album, you really only need one record and this is the one. Why? Because it's their first and most Melvins-y and because it forged a genre and set the standards for all copycats to come. I saw them on this tour with Buzzoven opening and they were way uglier at this time period than later. Fall of the Grey-Winged One - Aeons of Dreams (UK Import)

Fall of the Grey-Winged One is the work of Belgium's Stijn Van Cauter and he is a master of HEAVY drone. There's layers of deep, distorted bass just piled on top of each other all to create a truly intense experience. This is more in line with early Earth, Skullflower and even Khanate (sans drums) than mellower, drifting drone records, but there is still plenty of space here to be explored. Truly crushing. I had a chance to see Family Underground when they passed though Baltimore last summer. So when I had the chance to get some discs for the mailorder, I jumped on them. If you like your drones rich and meaty, then you will love "Salt of the Sun".
